Serenoa repens also commonly called as saw palmetto is the only species in the genus Serenoa. This is a smaller version of the palm whose maximum height is recorded as 4 mts. Saw palmetto Extract

This extract is prepeared from the berries of the serenoa plant by the process of cold pressing. The berries of the saw palmetto contain about 1.5 % of a fruity-smelling oil that contains saturated and unsaturated sterols and fatty acids. Free fatty acids (capric, caprylic, caproic, lauric, palmitic, and oleic acids) comprise about 63 % of this oil. The remaining oil is made up of ethyl esters of the above listed fatty acid and sterol, particularly beta-sitosterol and its glucoside. The berries are also comprised of carotenes, lipase, tannins, and sugars.Saw palmetto extract is used in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (accumulation of testosterone in prostrate gland). It is rich in fatty acids and phytosterols and used in traditional, eclectic, and alternative medicine for a variety of indications, most notably benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is used for the treatment of stomachache & dysentery and also as diuretic and sexual tonics. The Saw palmetto extracts began to gain popularity for its proven efficacy in preventing prostate enlargement and hair loss.
