Acoustical performances of Metafoam's material are outstanding, especially in low frequencies. Actually, no other metal foam, polymer foam or mineral fibers offer similar performances.
Tests results show that with a 6 cm thick metal foam, 60% of noise at 300 Hz is dissipated and the absorption coefficient is at least 80% for frequencies higher than 500 Hz. For a 2,4 cm thick sample, the absorption coefficient is still higher than 80% at more than 1500 Hz. Furthermore, we demonstrated that transmission losses are more important with a 10 mm thick metal foam than with a 50 mm thick conventional polymer foam.
Metafoam's material shows great acoustical properties and has many other advantages over polymer and mineral foams:
it is stiffer (higher Young's modulus) and thus has interesting structural characteristics;
contrarily to mineral whool, metal foam eliminates fiberizing problem;
it resists to high temperatures (>1000°C) and humidity which allows it to keep its acoustical properties for a longer time than conventional polymer and mineral foams;
it absorbs energy efficiently and then increases security in case of a pedestrian impact.
Metafoam has been selected as a subcontractor for a project led by an European car manufacturer to attenuate engines noise.
