Paper cut refer to handicrafts made by cutting paper with scissors to form different patterns and pasting them on walls, windows, doors and ceilings. They are sometimes referred to "chuāng huā", meaning Window Flower.
With their long history, paper cut, which originated in China, have been very popular among the ordinary people of China. The first paper cut can be traced back to the Northern and Southern Dynasties (386-581) period. People pasted paper cuts on walls, windows and doors at wedding ceremonies or festivals to enhance the festive atmosphere.
The patterns have roots in human life, animal, scenery, festivals, harvest, folk dramatic, fairy tales and so on, they are symbols for good luck, happiness, peace, kindness, beauty and best wishes.
Today, paper cuttings are chiefly used as decoration. They ornament walls, windows, doors, columns, mirrors, lamps and lanterns in homes and are also used for decoration on presents or are given as presents themselves.
