Soybeans contain natural plant hormones known as isoflavones. These isoflavones are also called phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are plant estrogens, or chemical compounds found in plants that are close in structure to the body’s form of estrogen. During menopause, the body produces less estrogen. However, phytoestrogens located within the soybean can be absorbed by the body, and thus mimic estrogen. Genistein and daidzein are two isoflavones which individually have shown to be effective in influencing disease mechanisms. Soy isoflavones are now promoted as powerful nutraceuticals, used in formulations to combat cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis, menopausal symptoms, and gastrointestinal disorders. Maintenance of estrogen levels is important to women of all ages, particularly during and after menopause.
