Gable-top cartons are widely used to contain liquids and are made from paperboard coated on their inner and outer surfaces with a thermoplastic coating such as low density polyethylene (LDPE). The coated paperboard is scored to define individual panels, and is folded along the score lines.The edges are sealed to form the carton.

The main board structures used in Gable top cartons are divided into four different types, as described below. Layered board structures are used where
  ◆ PE (Polyethylene) is the sealing layer providing protection from moisture and bacteria,
  ◆ Paperboard provides stiffness, strength and light protection,
  ◆ Aluminum provides the best oxygen barrier and light protection,
  ◆ EVOH-barrier represents a none foil alternative as an oxygen barrier where the light barrier   of aluminum foil is not required.
