Main applications of sodium metasilicate
1.Detergent auxiliary
Sodium metasilicate can be mixed with other common calcined soda to form as standard diluted dispergator, much better than pure dispergator. It has the strong capability of wetting, emulsifying, saponifying and is highly degreasing to fat, widely used for the manufacture of a variety of detergents in detergent industry, so it is the best substitute for STPP.
2.Metal surface treatment chemicals
When hydrolyzed in water, silicate yields silicic acid which is insoluble in water, but suspend in form of micellar structure in tank liquor. Such kind of micelle salvation has suspending and dispersive power to particle of solid dirt, emulsifying power to oil stain so it prevents dirt from depositing on the surface of a workpiece. Silicate has buffering capacity, that is, PH value remains unchanged in the presence of acidic dirt. Besides, with high valence metal ion, it can form precipitation to get rid of molysite in water. In a certain sense, it has water softening capacity because it can complex calcium ion and magnesium ion. It is also used as metal corrosion inhibitor because of the capacity of corrosion resistance, so almost every kind of alkali detergent which is used in process of fabricating parts for non-ferrous metal (aluminium, zinc, tin, etc.) contains silicate.

The reason why sodium metasilicate has diluting effect is that it can increase surface charge density of micelle in mud so that increase electric double layer and potential, thus, increase repelling force between particles. Meanwhile, The silicic acid radical anion in Sodium metasilicate can react with harmful ions(Ca2+, Mg2+) in mud to form insoluble substances to stimulate exchange interaction of Na+ so that the mud decrease in viscosity, increase in liquidity. It is especially suitable for additives used in slip-casting forming and ceramic forming.
