General Information: Sodium gluconate is the sodium salt of gluconic acid, produced by fermentation of glucose. It is a white to tan, granular to fine, crystalline powder, very soluble in water. Non corrosive, non toxic and readily biodegradable (98% after 2 days), sodium gluconate is more and more appreciated as chelating agent.

In a certain water cement ratio, as the increasing of sodium gluconate dosage, the time-correlated slump loss of concrete reduces a lot and even no slump loss as FORM 1 shows. It proves the excellent plasticizer of sodium gluconate.
2. The Effect on the Setting Time of Concrete:
The Effect of sodium gluconate of different dosage on the setting time of concrete as FORM 2:

It is easy to conclude from FORM 2 that the setting time of concrete, either initial setting time or final setting time, is prolonged a lot.

As FORM 3 shows, there is a best dosage of sodium gluconate towards concrete strength. When it is 3d, 0.05% dosage of sodium gluconate results the best concrete strength; when it is 7d, 28d and 60d, 0.07% dosage of sodium gluconate results the best concrete strength. The less dosage of sodium gluconate mainly affect the concrete strength 3d ago, which means that it has little effect on the concrete strength later; when the dosage is much more, it does not only affect the concrete strength 3d ago, but also affects concrete strength after 3d. Therefore, the concrete strength will increase by increasing the dosage of sodium gluconate, but the concrete strength will fall when the dosage exceeds the best dosage.
