Application:

Used for cold work tools requiring very long runs and close tolerance. D2 has high compressive strength and is used for blanking, stamping, and cold forming dies where emphasis is not on toughness. Some other applications are slitters, punches, thread rolling dies and trim dies.

 

Machinability:

Although readily machinable in the annealed condition D2 has a lower rating than most other tool steels. It is rated at 40% of a 1% carbon tool steel. It also has a low to medium grindability rating.
