The Turbine Protection System (TPS) consists of three TPS02 modules cabled to a single TPSTU02 termination unit. All electronic overspeed related protective functions are monitored and initiated in the TPS02 modules. Their operation is indepent from the Harmony Symphony Multi-Function Processor (MFP) or Bridge Controller (BRC) and data highways. Triple redundant inputs, 2-of-3-protection logic, and on-line testing capability are used to provide high reliability.
Each TPS02 module generates trip signals and calculates turbine speed and load imbalance independent of the others. Interposing relays are provided for all digital outputs. When a module generates a protective function signal, it activates a relay on the TU. The termination unit uses 2-of-3 modules voting to determine when to activate all relays associated with that protective function. The relay outputs of the TPSTU02 can be used to interface to main trip solenoids or to hydraulic manifolds such as those provided by ABB, which use "1-of-2-twice" logic that allows for on-line testing.
