Melamine is an industrial chemical used in dishware, jewelry, plastics, adhesives, countertops and other kitchen items. Invented in the 1830s by a German scientist, melamine dishes were used by the U.S. Navy during World War II, and melamine bowls became a colorful staple of the mid-20th-century modern American kitchen. Melamine was later linked to scandals involving pet food and infant formula.
