Properties:
1. White crystalline powder, with a faint odor of bay oil
2. One of the main component of soap. A Typical of amphiphiles: Its head is a polar molecule gene, hydrophilic and its tail is a hydrocarbon chain, lipophilic.
3. A saturated straight chain fatty acids. Present in the whale brain oil, milk, bay oil, coconut oil, palm oil and marine animal fat.
4. Insoluble in water. Soluble in methanol, slightly soluble in acetone and petroleum ether.
5. Stable under normal tempreture and pressure. Materials to avoid: Alkali, oxidant, reducing agent.
Application:
1. Lauric Acid is extensively used for making various types of surfactants, such as cationic, anionic, zwitterionic, and non-ionic.
2. Lauric acid is the raw material to produce soaps, detergents, cosmetics, alkyd resin, wetting agent, chemical fiber oil, pesticide etc
3. It is used to formulate the surface treatment agent for bonding. It is also used in the manufacture of synthetic fragrances, plastic stabilizers, corrosion resistance additives of gasoline and lubricating oil.
