Product Information
Design: Achille Castiglioni & Pierre Giacomo Castiglioni, 1962
Brand: Flos ,Italy

•Designed by Achille Castiglioni in 1962.
•As a work of art, Castiglioni’s Arco Lamp is part of the permanent exhibition at the New York Museum of Modern Art.
•Functional and elegant.
•Hand-sculpted square marble base.
•Choice of black or white marble.

A street light inspired the iconic "Arco", a suspension lamp that sits on the floor on an extremely heavy marble base. The hole in the base is to insert a sturdy broomstick for carrying. Castiglioni once said of the base: "Our first idea was concrete, but we chose marble because it gave us the same weight in a smaller volume and a better finish for a lower cost. Nothing in Arco is decorative. Even the bevelled corners of the base are functional, they avoid sharp angles, which could be dangerous.
Achille Castiglioni’s imaginative forms and simplistic designs have made him one of the most influential figures in Italian design. His works are represented in museums all over the world. MoMA in New York features 14 of his works. He has also been the recipient of numerous awards, including 9 Compasso d'Oro.

Designer Information
Achille Castiglioni and his brothers Livio and Pier are considered as one of the animating spirits of the Italian design. After his architecture studies at the university of Milan, Achille Castiglioni founded a design company with his two brothers in 1944. The Castiglionis quickly became one of the most important designers of Italy with their unique and obvious designs.
Achille and Pier Castiglioni did not only designed furniture - their most successful (and the most unknown product) was an outlet. Pier Castiglioni already died in 1968; Achille Castiglioni continued his successful activity as a designer for companies like Alessi, Olivetti or Zanotta till 2002.
