Brief Introduction
Voacanga africana is well known to African magic healers although little is known about the actual use of the seeds and bark of the various Voacanga species other than the fact that the plant is held in high esteem for ritual purposes.
Vincamine is produced through two chemical reactions beginning with the catalytic reduction of tabersonine, an alkaloid extract of Voacanga seeds. The resulting product, vincadiformine is oxidized forming vincamine;
Vinpocetine is a semisynthetic alkaloid of Vincamine (ethyl ester of Apovincamine) found in the seed of the Voacanga Africana.
