5.Chemical reaction:In a zinc–manganese dioxide dry battery, the zinc can is the negative terminal through which the electric current flows into the device. The zinc is oxidised according to the following half-equation.
Zn(s) → Zn2+(aq) + 2 e [E° = -0.7626 volts]
The positive terminal is a mixture of chemicals – usually a mixture of manganese dioxide powder, carbon and an electrolyte to increase the electrical conductivity. A carbon electrode rod also is placed inside the middle of the battery, connecting the two metal-capped ends of opposite charge and serving as the positive terminal.The reaction is as follows:2MnO2(s) + 2 e + 2NH4Cl(aq) → Mn2O3(s) + 2NH3(aq) + H2O(aq) + 2 Cl [e° ≈ +.5 v]and the Cl combines with the Zn2+.There are other possible side-reactions, but the overall reaction in a zinc–manganese dioxide battery can be represented as:Zn(s) + 2MnO2(s) + 2NH4Cl(aq) → Mn2O3(s) + Zn(NH3)2Cl2 (aq) + H2O(l
