Description of Ceramic Sand
Ceramic Sand is a kind of refractory particle with diameter of 0.020mm~3.350mm, mainly made
of Al2O3·SiO2. It is ball-shaped particle made from bauxite by high-temperature melting in
electric-arc furnace, spraying and cooling.
Applications of Ceramic Sand
? Widely used in foundry technique like resin-bonded sand, sodium silicate sand, and clay-
bonded sand for sand core and casting mould making.
? Replace chromite sand and widely used in sand core making like jacket core, oil duct core,
tappet core of engine.
? Replace chromite sand for steel casting facing sand and sub-layer of molding sand (backing
sand).
? Widely used as dry sand and sand box for EPC process and V method of casting processes.
? Widely used as the main raw materials of advanced refractory products (Ladle drainage sand,
gravity casting material, casting coating, etc.).
? Widely used as cleaning sand for copper and aluminum alloy castings.
Features of Ceramic Sand
? As solid spherical sand, the surface area is small, which can reduce one third the amount of
binder (resin, or R2O·nSiO2 etc.). Good fluidity, easy to fill and close-grained without dead
space when producing sand mould and sand core. Low gas evolution and high permeability,
can reduce defects, increase the rate of finished products and lower the cost of casting
material.
? High refractoriness, low coefficient of thermal expansion with good stability under high
temperature. During the process of foundry, the sand is easily dispersed, easy to clean, no
sintering and gluing on the casting, which reduce the deformation of the casting, reduce the
clean-up work and lighten labor intensity.
? Reasonable grading composition of the particle, improve the strength of casting mould and
sand core.
? The bulk density of ceramaic foundry sand is 1.79-1.87g/cm3, lower than the bulk density
of chromitesand (2.5~2.9g/cm3), the sand core is easy to move with light weight, and also can
reduce the usage amount of sand.
? The sand is man-made by melting under high temperature, so it has stable chemical parame-
ter, unified physical properties. Neutral material, both acid and basic binder agent can be
used.
