Chelating agent is the material that can form chelate by combining with metal ions. When two or more molecules or ions containing lone pair electrons combine with center ion in empty valence shell, at
the same time, the enter ions with salt effect and complex effect react with metal cation. These cyclic compounds with salt effect and complex effect are known as chelating agent.
Through single mineral test and determination of adsorption, we study the influence of Fe3 + ions,
organic chelating agent citric acid, tartaric acid, oxalic acid, EDTA and alizarin red S on quartz
flotation when the sodium oleate is used as collector. The results are shown: Fe3 + ions can activate
the flotation of quartz within the scope of neutral and weak alkaline environment. And five kinds of
organic chelating agent can effectively inhibit the flotation of quartz which is activated by Fe3 + ion. By the analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we find out the activation mechanism of Fe3 + ions to quartz is that
Fe3 + ions can generate adsorption on the quartz surface and increase quartz's adsorption of
sodium oleate. The inhibitory mechanisms of five kinds of organic chelating agent to the quartz is that these organic chelating agent and Fe3 + ion which is adsorbed on quartz surface can form water
soluble chelate. Therefore the active site of adsorbing sodium oleate on the quartz surface is lost.
