I work in scrap recycling which necessitates the use frequent use of a magnet to test the ferrous content of metals.
I first used one of those magnets that you get at trade shows, but decided to upgrade to a "real" magnet.

This little guy is dramatically more powerful than the trade show magnets, which also allows you to test for stainless steel
since it will more easily pick up the weak magnet pull.

I've also found my pocket "stick" to a shopping cart or a metal washing machine and found that this magnet
in my pocket was stuck to the metal.

If your key chain isn't huge with tons of keys and other accessories, you can actually stick your entire key chain to a metal surface
and have it hanging there.
