In a traditional wire rope, its element wires cross each other at points (Point-contact).
In a compacted rope, surface-to-surface contacts are achieved among the element wires.
Problems with traditional wire rope
Round rope with Lang's Lay is very difficult to handle for it easily untwist itself and develop kinks.
Regular ropes meet the drum or sheave at points and wear them heavily.
Advantages of Area Contact Rope
Minimized internal abrasion and wear
Larger effective metallic cross section
Higher breaking strength per Diameter
Easy to handle even when produced with Lang's Lay
Drum or sheave last longer when used with compacted ropes.
