Works appreciation:
In Chinese traditional culture, the gourd is the symbol of richness, prosperous family, sweet love, good health and long life. "Fluke Treasure Light" Cloisonne Table Lamp is on the basic shape of gourd. The total number of the entire gourd is 9, which means fluke and permanence; the main patterns of the work are the composite flowers on the Tang Bao caisson of Mogao Grottoes, which is designed in Tang Dynasty, which means auspicious; screen is with blue tone, which is a symbol of open-mind, freedom and eternity. Over the work, five beacons are exhibited according to the orientation of the five elements in ancient Chinese thought, meaning peace and harmony.

MASTER OF CREATION
"Auspicious" Cloisonne Ceiling lamp was designed and created by Master Zhang Xiangdong. Zhang Xiangdong is Chinese master of cloisonne art, member of China Invention Association, representative inheritor of cloisonne which is intangible cultural heritage, art director of Beijing Lian Jiasheng Cloisonne Lighting Co., Ltd. He was born in 1960 in Beijing, China, he has engaged in the cloisonne art for 40 years so far. His works repeatedly won the gold medal of various art exhibitions and many of his works were entitled as "Chinese national boutique of art". For example, his cloisonne work "The Long-lasting Lucky Fragrance Lamp" was awarded the gold medal in 2008 "Art Garden of Nature Craftsmanship & Flowers Cup" in the 9th National Exhibition of Craft and Art Masterwork and International Art Boutique; his cloisonne work "Gentleman" was awarded the gold medal in 2011 "Art Garden of Nature Craftsmanship & Flowers Cup" in the 12th National Exhibition of Craft and Art Masterwork and International Art Boutique; another two cloisonne works of his "Dignity and Success" and "Advocating the Five Virtues" were entitled as Chinese national boutique of art in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Mr Zhang Xiangdong is also an art and crafts master specialized in cloisonne lamp research and development in China. He is praised to be the "father of Chinese cloisonne lamp" by collectors and insiders both at home and abroad. In 2011, one of the cloisonne works of Zhang Xiangdong was bought for RMB6.7 million ($1.05 million) by a Taiwan wealthy businessman for collection.

 PRODUCTION PROCESS :
"Fluke Treasure Light" Cloisonne Table Lamp adopts royal art cloisonné for production. The production of the work needs through 16pcs of copper bodies welding by handmade, over 30000 times of filigreeing and glazing, over 200 times of welding and polishing, over 30 rounds of gilding and tracing a design in gold, in total the whole artwork should be through body-making, filigreeing, coloring, enameling, polishing, gilding, etc more than 100 procedures, and fully by handmade. 



 

Gourd: the treasure in auspicious culture

The gourd is one of the most favorite mascots for Chinese nations, and it takes very important place in modern auspicious culture with its unique historical origin, deep cultural connotation and extensive public basis.

First, the gourd means richness. In Chinese, the homophonic word of gourd is " fluke" , and the appearance of the gourd is round and also has good shape, it looks in good fortune, as its characters of small mouth and big body, it seems that it can absorb the gold jewelry which could not flow out. So in Chinese traditional culture, the gourd has the function of hoarding and gathering wealth.

Second, the gourd means prosperous family. The stems of the gourd are called vine, the homophonic word of vine is " ten thousand" in Chinese, the homophonic word of " belt of vine" is " all ages" in Chinese, inside each mature gourd, there are many seeds. So in Chinese traditional culture, the gourd is the symbol of " children and future generations, and the prosperous family" .

Third, the gourd means sweet love. The old saying goes that " getting married is the starting from the couple" . According to the legend, in ancient weddings, there was an import ceremony, that is cutting the gourd into 2pcs of gourd ladle, and connected by the red line, after the bride and bridegroom entered the bridal chamber, both of them carried the ladle to drink and gargle, this symbolized the couple held together, they would be harmonious and happy in future.

Forth, the gourd is also the symbol of driving away danger, good health and long life. In China, Taoist temple and Buddhist temple always treated the gourd as the treasure for the temples, and they used the gourd to drive away danger, and suppress the five venoms, such as the musical instruments used in a Buddhist or Taoist mass for Icon Crutch Li of the Eight Immortals in the legend was the gourd. Meanwhile, the phrase " practice medicine (using the pot) in order to help the people" was praising the doctors in ancient times saved people from disease. The pot here, which is the gourd, as well as medicine gourd, so the gourd is also the symbol of good health and long life.

Hardworking and simple Chinese people gave the gourd with deep cultural connotation with the way of thinking in symbolic. This impressed Chinese people had been yearn for and pursue beautiful life since ancient times, meanwhile it also reflected the romantic theme of ancient eastern country with an ancient civilization.
