Introduction to Corns:
A corn is a localized thickening of the skin due to pressure. Corns often occur on the top of the toes where there is pressure from the shoes. However, they also occur at the sole of the foot and in between toes. Certain corns may become entwined with the nerves of the skin, these corns are particularly painful. Often corns develop a core which is often referred to as the "root" by patients.
Understanding this condition:
Corns can be very painful, especially if there is inflammation and swelling around the corn. This condition is more prevalent in females as a result of wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes. Corns appear as white/ grey or yellow/ brown in colour, dependant on your skin type. Symptoms include pain and swelling around the corn and discomfort with direct pressure.
Causes of corns:
>Tight shoes
>Deformed toes(Hammer toes)
>Seam or stitch inside the shoe which rubs against the toe
>Abnormality of gait(walking)
>Surgery to the lower extremities
>Bunions
Symptoms:
A corn is an area of thickened skin that occurs as a result of pressure, normally over a bony prominence. Nature always tries to protect itself from damage and this is why the skin becomes thicker. Corns are painful on pressure. There is a darker area of skin within the corn which is often mistaken for a 'root'. This is called the nucleus and is an inverted conical area of compacted skin, pointing to the area of most pressure and pain. Hard corns can occur anywhere on the foot and can be hard or soft. Corns can grow between the toes where two joints rub together. Seed corns are slightly different, they are normally found in small clusters on the sole of the foot and feel like you have a small glass splinter. These are not necessarily associated with pressure alone dryness and friction play a part.
Treatment:
As soon as the corn starts to develop it is important to remove pressure. Using a herbs based plaster such as corn plasters can help soften and cushion the painful area. Our corn plasters contain a special medicated area which can relieves pain immediately & helps remove the corn .Try to avoid shoes that are too tight for you and if the corn persists or you're having any concern about your feet, see a registered podiatrist.
Here's quick relief that helps remove "core"while you walk
CORNS aggravated by today's extra walking are apt to get bigger ,more painful. Corn plaster not only removes the top, leaves the "core"behind.but works while you walk ;quickly relieves pain ;gently softens and loosens the corn so it may be easily removed ,including the pain-producing core.
Prevention:
1.To prevent a corn from developing it is necessary to avoid pressure. Therefore if you know you are going to wear tight or new shoes, put on a protective pad or blister dressing. Remember that blisters often precede corns, so you need to avoid those too.
2.Try using a foot moisturiser before bedtime, as creaming the feet will help keep the skin more flexible and will slow down the onset of seed corns.
Caution:
Adults over 16 years: apply fresh plaster daily until corn can be removed
Treatment may be continued for up to 2 weeks unless directed otherwise by a doctor.
DON'T USE A KNIFE!
Corns come back BIGGER UGLIER unless removed Root and all
A knife is always dangerous, and paring corns leaves the root imbedded in the toe to grow back bigger and more painful. Why risk infection? Use the new, safe corn plasters to stop pain instantly, by removing pressure, then in 7 short days the corn lifts out root and all (exceptionally stubborn cases may require a second application). Corn plaster is a tiny medicated plaster. Easy to use.
