Whisker reinforcement involves strengthening a hard ceramic matrix with strong,stiff, silicon carbide crystals, commonly called whiskers. When are dispersed into a matrix of fine-grained aluminum oxide, the whiskers add tensile strength and improve the fracture toughness of the ceramic matrix.
Whisker-reinforced ceramics use silicon carbide whiskers (SiCw) to dramatically increase toughness and enable the use of coolant. Whisker-reinforced ceramics are ideal for machining Ni-based alloys(e.g. Inconel), Co-based super alloys (e.g. Stellite) and for roughing hard castings and hardened steel.
