Mesterolone is an orally applicable androgen and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) derivative. It is sold under the brand names Proviron (as Provironum in Asia-Pacific region) and Mestoranum.

Proviron represents one of the oldest anabolic androgenic steroids on the market. A product of the giant pharmaceutical company Schering, it would first appear in 1934. Officially known as Mesterolone, it has appeared under numerous brand names over the years, but the Proviron name has continually remained dominant. It has also remained one of the most misunderstood anabolic steroids among steroid users.

Proviron is an oral anabolic steroid, a synthetic product of the male hormone testosterone. Just as with DHT, the activity of this steroid is that of a strong androgen which does not aromatize into estrogen.

Clinical Application

In clinical situations Proviron is generally used to treat various types of sexual dysfunction, which often result from a low endogenous testosterone level. The drug has shown value in treating men with mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety and bipolar disorders.

The drug also is commonly used to treat sexual dysfunction, including low sperm count. Additionally, mesterolone may enhance the effectiveness of other steroids. Interestingly, unlike other steroids, the drug shows little value for bodybuilding, but has the same health risks involved in steroid use for that purpose.

Mesterolone can usually reverse problems of sexual disinterest and impotency, and is sometimes used to increase the sperm count. The drug does not stimulate the body to produce testosterone, but is simply an oral androgen substitute that is used to compensate for a lack of the natural male androgen.
