Since 1960, the steroid hormone is approved for use since the birth control pill has improved the quality of life for tens of millions of women to enable them to follow their own will to decide whether and when to bear children. According to reports, the United States 15 to 19-year-old sexually active population, 43 per cent of contraceptive use [1]. The use of contraceptives is also growing rapidly, China Retail Pharmaceutical Research and Development Center (MDC) statistics show that in 2009 retail sales of contraceptives increased 13.5% compared to 2008. Contraceptive drugs by administering exogenous estrogen, progesterone, interfere with normal hormone levels in vivo, inhibiting ovulation, changing the cervical mucus, inhibiting sperm penetration, to prevent fertilization purposes. Progestin contraceptives can be used alone or in combination with estrogen. When progesterone combined with estrogen use, can better control the menstrual cycle, menstrual-like bleeding form a regular. Some progestin can also be used to improve menopausal syndrome (HRT), treatment of gynecological diseases and reproductive system cancer adjuvant therapy.
In the last 20 years, five new progesterone has been widely used in foreign countries (see Table 1), are: ene norgestrel (nestorone, NES), nomegestrol (nomegestrolacetate, NOMAc), trimegestone ( trimegestone, TMG), dienogest (dienogest, DNG) and drospirenone (drospirnone, DRSP). Among them, the first three are 19-demethyl derivative of progesterone, DNG to 19-positions to the methyl derivative of testosterone, aldosterone and DRSP is a derivative. Compared with the first to third generation progestogen, progestogen such non-androgen, estrogen or glucocorticoid activity, has anti-androgenic activity, combined with the progesterone receptor (PR) of more selective and specific acting more like natural progesterone, can not offset in the prevention of intimal hyperplasia while the protective effect of estrogen on the blood vessels, and thus higher security, foreign scholars are seen as the fourth-generation progestin [2-4], see Table 2. In terms of anti-progestin, compared with mifepristone, a new anti-progesterone gifted of Sterling (ulipristalacetate) anti-glucocorticoid activity decreased significantly.
