Brief Introduction:

Like traditonal cassava starch making, modern Cassava starch processing starts from frsh cassava    Like traditonal cassava starch making, modern Cassava starch processing starts from frsh cassava roots washing to finished cassava starch via cassava roots rasping, cassava pulp sieving, cassava starch milk purifying, and cassava starch dewatering.

   1. Fresh cassava roots washing-----the better washing the higher quality of the finished starch. As the cassava fresh roots being havested from the land contains a certain percentage of residues such as sand, small or bigger stones, or even metals being mixed during processing, It is the first very important step to remove the residues. Why? because the material we need is the fresh cassava roots, the purer raw material the easier and safer running for the following processings for cassava roots grating, fiber extraction, starch milk washing, etc. Imagine, once a stone with size of an egg or a coin size of metal were fed into the following rasping machine, the high speed rotating drum will be damaged instantly, furthermore the sieve screen, etc. So in some factories, there are some manual jobs appears along the conveyor belts to check out the material more carefully. Normally in the washing processing, it is a wise idea to add a stone or metal selecting set by self gravity force in the floating washing water, and it is a must to add a magnetic set to remove the metals. and furtherly for the last conveying step where material being fed into the following processing, it is a better idea to choose a net belt with reasonable size of the holes through which any smaller and harder articles could be dropped off before cassava roots were finally fed into the following process. In all, do as much as we could to ensure the raw material of the cassava roots to be pure!

2, Cassava roots grating----the finer rasping the more starch articles being come out. As we know the starch grain exists with a very small size of about 20μm ( for cassava starch). and is stocked inside the roots cells. So what we do next is to break off the roots cells from which to make the starch grain come out. Nowdays there are quite a number of ways to grating the roots, such as hammer crusher by rotating hammer force, and grating machine by high speed saw blades with sharp end. and meanwhile to choose the reasonable size of the sieve screen inside the breaking machine to get the best breaking results. But anyhow there should be a way of keeping the sieve screen hole to be unblocked by roots pulp being sticking upon either by checking regularly or a time set spray washing method upon the sieve screen.

   3.  Starch extraction----the opener sieve screen the more starch we get. It is not a easy job to get the starch grain of about 20μm from the roots pulp which mixed with roots fibers, liquid of protien, minials, etc. To sieve off the bigger size of roots fibers obviously comes to be the first step to get the starch grain. Either by plane rotating sieve screen or round rotating sieve screen, obviously sieve screen becomes the key issue. The mesh size of the screen must be choosed properly, and it also should be strong enough, and most importantly we should keep it unblocked as its hole size from 120μm to about 80μm which is easily being impeded. In this process, spray washing is an important way to keep the sieve hole continuously open both by process water and clean water. And the amount of them should be counted accurately to keep the whole flow balance run.

4.      Starch refining--- the better washing the purer starch. After the root pulp being sieved through the sieve screen, there leaves corse starch milk. Anyway it is not pure yet, it contains part of protien liquid, minerals, etc. In order to get final pure starch milk, we have to remove the above residues. Nowdays the most popular machines are multicyclone set or separators to separate starch from the milk by their different centrifugal power/rate in floating or running cone shape set. So far as we know, starch refining process like clothes washing, the reasonable more times washing the better starch milk we get.
