Pharmacology and mechanism of action
Benzimidazole antiparasitic drug. like other Benzimidazoles, mebemdazole produces a degeneration of the parasite microtubule and irreversibly blocks glucose uptake in parasites. Inhibition of glucose Uptake cause depletion of energy stores in the parasite, eventually resulting In death. however, there is no effect on glucose metabolism in mammals.
Indications and clinical uses
Mebendazole is used in horses for treatment of Infections caused by large roundworms (Parascaris equorum), large strongyles (Strongylus edentatus, S.Equinus, and S.Vulgaris), small strongyles, and mature and immature (fourth larval stage pinworms [Oxyuris equi]). In dogs it has been Used for treatment of infections of roundworms (Toxocara canis), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala), whipworms (Trichuris vulpis), and tapeworms (Taenia pisiformis).
Precautionary Information
Adverse reactions and side effects
Adverse reactions are rare. Mebendazole causes Occasional vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Some report suggest idiosyncratic Hepatic reactions in dogs.
