Bottle Trap Installation

How to Install a Bottle Trap?
A bottle trap is the section of pipe located under the basin of lavatory sinks. It is wider than the pipes leading in and out of it. Some manufacturers make telescopic bottle traps that can be installed in just a few minutes. The trap features an adjustable piece that extends upward to fit the drain. It is attached easily to the waste pipe, and can be used with almost any water basin. A universal adapter can be used if the standard trap does not fit your sink.

While most plumbing jobs should be left to professionals, installing a bottle trap is not difficult. It takes very little time and requires no additional tools. This is a general installation guide for a plastic telescopic bottle trap. Always follow the specific instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Attach Trap to Waste Water Pipe
Turn off the main water supply. Remove the outlet nut from the top of the bottle trap by turning it counterclockwise. Place the nut onto the wastewater pipe. Remove the plastic washer and conical rubber washer, and fit onto the pipe. The conical washer is slightly tapered, so make sure the thicker end goes on the pipe first, with the thinner edge facing out. Place the trap outlet over the pipe. Place the outlet nut on and align the threads. Turn clockwise to tighten.

Attach Trap to Basin
To fit the trap to the basin, loosen the top nut and extend the telescopic piece up to the desired height. Place the outlet nut onto the basin drain pipe. Line up the threads and tighten it by hand. Tighten the lock nut at the bottom of the adjustable piece. Do not use a wrench or any other tool to tighten or loosen plastic nuts, because this will strip the threads, making their removal and reattachment more difficult. If you have trouble gripping the nut, wrap a damp cloth or extra thick [rubber band] around the nut, then turn.

Test for Leaks
Turn on the main water supply. Place a receptacle underneath the trap to catch any leaking water. Turn on the faucet and run the water to test for leaks. If there is leaking around any of the outlet nuts, tighten them by hand until the leaking stops.

Attach a Universal Bottle Trap
Some sink pipes may be smaller than the fittings of the bottle trap. In this case, use a universal adapter. Attach the adapter to the basin drain pipe. Attach the conical rubber adapter in place of the regular conical rubber washer. Attach the bottle trap to the pipe using the steps above.

Clean the Trap
For periodic trap cleaning, or to unclog a drain, place a receptacle underneath the bottle trap. Turn off the main water supply and make sure the sink has been drained. Turn the base of the trap clockwise until it separates from the trap. Empty out any excess water.  Clean the trap and remove clogs.
