Stigmasterol

Introduction

Stigmasterol is one of a group of phytosterol. Stigmasterol is an unsaturated plant sterol occuring in plant fats or oils of soybean,calabar bean and rape seed,and in a number of medicinal herbs. Research has indicated that stigmasterol mar be useful in prevention of certain cancers, including ovarian, prostate, breast and colon cancers. Studies have also indicated that a diet high in phytosterols may inhibit the absorption of cholesterol and lower serum cholesterol levels by compting for intestinal absorption.

Properties: monomer stigmasterol as a white solid having optical activity, relative density slightly greater than water, melting point above 100 C, insoluble in water, alkali and acid, at room temperature, slightly soluble in acetone and ethanol decomposition occurs at high temperatures and sublimation, at 150 C -170 C hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin is easy to exceed 250 C.
