Lighting design applies to a task of both science and art to balance the light production and luminaire photometric in the built environment. It requires consideration of the amount of functional light provided, energy consumed and the aesthetic impact supplied by the lighting system.

Solid-state technologies have seen rapidly evolving since last decade and became technically viable for substituting the traditional lighting apparatus in term of its luminance efficacy, energy consumption and environmental friendliness. However, cost of solid state luminaires are relatively higher than that of the traditional lighting in term of initial payout.
